S.League: Hafiz Nor calls on Geylang to maintain momentum against Hougang

Tipped by many to be the surprise package in the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League this season, Geylang International found themselves mired in a slow start when the campaign began earlier this year.

Five points from their first seven games proved a poor return, with a thrilling first league victory over Tampines Rovers followed by a run of three straight losses.

However, the Eagles appear to have turned things around of late. Friday's thrilling 2-2 draw with Balestier Khalsa extended their unbeaten run to three games, from which they have picked up seven points.

Winger Hafiz Nor believes that their upsurge in form has come about as a result of the team's belief in head coach Jorg Steinebrunner's plans, even when things were not going their way initially.

"I think we trained hard and obviously everyone in the team [still] felt motivated to work with each other," he told ESPN FC. "We have been in good form for the past three games and we want to soar as high as possible, and keep the momentum going."

Their next opponents on Tuesday, Hougang United, present a decent opportunity for Hafiz and his teammates to do just that on paper.

The Cheetahs have not won any of their 10 games so far and are rooted to the bottom of the table, having lost six of those.

A 4-0 thumping by Home United last time out meant that they have conceded a league-worst 18 times, while they have the second-poorest goal tally with eight strikes.

The absence of key centre-back Kunihiro Yamashita, who is incidentally their top scorer with three goals, presents coach Salim Moin with problems at both ends.

Geylang's attacking duo of Jozef Kaplan and Bruno Castanheira will be relishing the chance to sink their claws into Hougang. Together, they have accounted for 10 of the club's 12 league goals and all four of Castanheira's league assists have been provided for Kaplan.

Noting the chemistry between the pair, Hafiz said: "They can work and communicate well with each other."

With six goals in their last three games, Geylang have already scored as many as they did in the preceding seven matches - and the 26-year-old attacker is also keen to open his accounts for the season and add to that.

"I think the goals are coming; I can feel it," he said. "It's a team game [in the end though] and it doesn't worry me too much because we play as a team and win as a team. That is all that matters."

Hafiz insisted that Geylang will not take the game at Hougang Stadium lightly, but believes that they are in a good frame of mind going into it.

"I am very sure now that all of us have the winning mentality and we will play and do our best against Hougang," he asserted.
