S.League: Warriors aim to reclaim top spot against Geylang

Warriors FC will be looking to move back to the top of the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League on Saturday evening with a win against Geylang International at the Bedok Stadium.

It has been a week to forget for the defending champions after last week's 3-1 defeat to Brunei DPMM FC was followed up by a 6-0 thumping at the hands of Indonesian side Persipura Jayapura in the AFC Cup on Tuesday.

They currently find themselves second on the table after being overtaken by Albirex Niigata (S) on Friday, although they are only a point behind and can reclaim top spot with a win against the Eagles.

Apart from last week's defeat to DPMM and a stunning 6-0 loss to Albirex back in March, the Warriors have won all their other six league matches and remain firmly in the running to retain the S.League title.

A key factor to their good form has been the astute signing of Singapore international striker Fazrul Nawaz following his failed move to Malaysian Premier League outfit Sabah, with the 30-year-old netting five times in his first three matches to help his side claim important wins over Home United, Hougang United and Tampines Rovers.

In addition to Fazrul, Warriors boss Alex Weaver also has foreign stars Nicolas Velez and Miroslav Pejic to call upon, and considering the duo combined for a total of 34 goals in all competition last season, there is no denying the Englishman has one of the most potent attacks in the league at his disposal.

They will be coming up against a Geylang side that have shown they can beat the competition's top teams when at their best, having recorded a spirited 3-2 win over Eastern Derby rivals Tampines earlier in the season.

However, that remains the Eagles' only victory in 2015 so far and they are desperately in need of a positive result after losing in their last three outings, including a shock 2-1 defeat to Harimau Muda.

Following that defeat, Geylang boss Jorg Steinebrunner failed to hide his disappointment as he demanded more from his charges.

"In the defeats to Albirex and DPMM, perhaps there were some positives to take but there were none from the loss to Harimau Muda," he said. "The effort from some of the players was just not good enough and if it continues, I'll have no choice but to look at changing our players in the mid-season break."

Warriors were the winners in both their league meetings last season, although Geylang did record a 4-0 triumph in the League Cup after Weaver decided to rest almost his entire starting lineup.
