S.League: Warriors go top after win over Young Lions

Warriors FC came from behind to seal all three points for the second successive match as they edged the Courts Young Lions 2-1 on Monday night in the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League.

After beating Tampines Rovers in a 3-2 thriller last Friday at the Jalan Besar Stadium, the uniformed side repeated the trick at the same venue to move top of the table.

Miroslav Pejic emerged as the hero for the Warriors with his first goals of the season, after the defending champions put on a sluggish showing in the opening 45.

It was the Young Lions who made the brighter start and only the heroics of goalkeeper Daniel Ong prevented them from entering the break with a bigger lead.

Amy Recha was the first to test the custodian on 13 minutes as he pounced on Nur Asyidiq Sukarto's fluffed clearance and brought the ball into the box, but it was bundled behind by an onrushing Daniel.

The ensuing corner was worked to Adam Swandi, who curled a 25-yard effort narrowly wide.

Daniel made the save of the game two minutes later, showing fantastic reflexes to tip over Shahfiq Ghani's deflected effort from the edge of the box.

The pressure from Aide Iskandar's charges was relentless and Amy really should have put them ahead in the 22nd minute, but he volleyed Shameer Aziq's cross wide from eight yards.

The deadlock was finally broken a minute later, when Adam scored his first ever S.League goal.

Picking Daniel Bennett's pocket on the left, the former FC Metz forward glided into the area before slotting a fine finish into the far corner.

However, Alex Weaver's team came out strongly in the second half and turned the game on its head.

A last-ditch intervention from Amirul Adli took the ball off Nicolas Velez's toes, before the Argentinian then blasted a 30-yarder right at Syazwan Buhari.

It was one-way traffic to the visitors, with Vidosevic and Hafiz Rahim both getting opportunities before two goals in the span of five minutes settled the score.

Pejic was the beneficiary of superb deliveries on both occasions, first heading in Vidosevic's cross in the 71st minute, before bringing down Velez's ball and then slotting in from close range.

The hosts failed to find a response to going behind and Adam's effort from 25 yards, which was deflected narrowly past the post on 87 minutes, was the best they could do.

The defeat meant that the Young Lions stayed rooted to the bottom of the table with one point from six games, although Aide believed their first-half showing was the best he had seen so far.

"It wasn't an easy game having to play the defending champions who had players full of experience, but overall you can say I am proud of the boys," he asserted after the game. "The spirit was good, work-rate was good although of course we need to cut out the mistakes.

"For me, what is most important is that we have to improve game by game. As long as they give their best, that's the most important - you wouldn't want to see them give up."

Aide also revealed that the SEA Games squad will have centralized training from May 1 to 9 at the Singapore Sports School before heading to Japan for a camp from May. 10 to 17.

Counterpart Weaver admitted that his tactics of defending deeper and being more compact in the first half "didn't really work", but he was confident the game "wasn't out of our reach".

"It's not a complacency element for me for sure; I was concerned but you are [also] confident that at some point, you are going to get chances [with the players we had]," he said.

He was also happy that Pejic finally opened his accounts for the season.

"I am really pleased," Weaver said. "He's done well without scoring - sort of this time last year, he was top scorer -[but] he's had his injury problems [this season] and he's had to come back and get into a rhythm, which he has done."
