S.League: Duric wants Tampines to be more clinical in front of goal

Tampines Rovers assistant coach Aleksandar Duric knows that his side cannot afford to waste their chances in front of goal when they take on Warriors FC in the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday night.

The five-time S.League champions sit in fifth spot with nine points after five matches but have only six goals to show for, despite dominating much of the possession in those games.

The scorer of 439 S.League goals, the recently retired Duric knows that the Stags must convert their goalscoring chances if they are to finish the season with silverware.

"We have been creating many chances to score but just cannot finish them." Duric told ESPN FC. "If we want to win the league title at the end of the season, we must start putting those chances away because teams will punish you if you fail to score."

Against Alex Weaver's Warriors, Tampines will stick to the same starting eleven who succumbed to a 3-2 loss against Geylang International in their last game.

New striker Rodrigo Tosi will continue to lead the line, while Roberto Alviz, Ridhuan Muhamad and Firdaus Idros will provide the ammunition just behind him.

The latter is a player who has caught the eye of Duric, having been a regular starter for V. Sundramoorthy's team this season.

"Firdaus has been really good and impressive this season. Very consistent and he has done well for us so far. But we cannot depend on one or two players to perform, the entire team must step up their game and contribute." added Duric.

In what has traditionally been billed as one of the heavyweight bouts in the S.League, Duric knows the significant of these big games and the confidence it can bring to the victors.

"Tampines against Warriors has always been a big, big game in the S.League. Playing such games and winning them gives you a huge confidence boost and this is exactly what we need. This season is tough because every club can cause an upset and we can only get to the top of we play to our very best and take points off our direct rivals." declared the legend.

On the opposite bench will be Weaver, whose team's foray into the AFC Cup this season has ended on a low, as he seeks to focus on defending the league title.

The Englishman had to make do without most of his foreign contingent in their 1-0 home loss to Bengaluru FC on Tuesday night. Weaver is likely to bring back the likes of Nicholas Velez, Miroslav Pejic, Thomas Beattie and Kevin McCann.

While the quartet's return will boost the hopes of recording their sixth league victory, it is Singapore international forward Fazrul Nawaz who could hold the key to success when they take on Tampines.

The striker has been in sensational form since making his season debut against Home United and already has three goals to his name, just one behind striker partner Velez.

The other S.League match of the night will see Malaysian outfit Harimau Muda take on Home United at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Malacca.
