Shakhtar's Taras Stepanenko escapes serious injury after clash of heads

Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Taras Stepanenko has escaped serious injury after a clash of heads in Wednesday's Champions League playoff game at Rapid Vienna.

Stepanenko clashed with Rapid's Srdan Grahovac just before half-time and was carried off the field on a stretcher while Grahovac continued to play on wearing a bandage on his head.

Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu said after the game: "It appears to be a very serious injury. Our doctors are also at the hospital. We don't know what is yet. But word was that he was no longer able to feel his arm."

However, the Ukrainian has now been released from hospital and is travelling back to Ukraine with his teammates, although Shakhtar didn't reveal whether the player would be available for the return match in Lviv on Tuesday.

Shakhtar beat Rapid 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal by Marlos which could see them qualify for the Champions League group stage for a sixth straight season if they can avoid defeat in the second leg.
