Sevilla face 'difficult' but 'possible' challenge against Bayern - Montella

Sevilla coach Vincenzo Montella is optimistic his team can pull off another upset and eliminate Bayern Munich from the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Spanish club, which beat Manchester United in the round of 16, needs to overturn a 2-1 deficit at the Allianz Arena against the newly crowned Bundesliga champions to reach the last four of the competition.

And while Montella was realistic about the challenge his team faced against Jupp Heynckes' team, he also was confident they were in good position to pull off the unthinkable.

"It's going to be difficult, but it's possible," he said in Tuesday's news conference. "The important thing is to remain in the game, to have balance, be patient. We don't have to do many calculations.

"We have to play the same way as we did in the first leg. We have to give a good image. I really think it's possible. The important thing is not to concede goals."

Luck was not on Sevilla's side in the opening leg as a Jesus Navas own goal and Thiago Alcantara's deflected header sealed a comeback victory after Pablo Sarabia had given Sevilla a first-half lead.

Sevilla also conceded an own goal in Saturday's 4-0 league defeat at Celta Vigo, while the Andalusian club had also previously conceded two late goals in a 2-2 draw against Barcelona on March 31.

"I'm not superstitious," Montella said. "In the last three games, we've been unlucky. But hopefully our luck will return, perhaps tomorrow."

Sevilla are taking part in three competitions as they prepare to face Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final in Madrid on April 21, while after taking just one point in their last four league games, they have dropped to seventh place.

"We've struggled more in La Liga," the Italian coach said. "When we lose balance and we are in a hurry, we lose our heads

"On Saturday, we had chances to score but once we conceded, we started to play individually and not as a team. We have to work in attack. Against Bayern, we will have to work a lot, have a bit of luck.

"But the most important thing is for the team to be more compact. It's not about dominating possession but rather when you have the ball to be able to penetrate and get through on goal."

Bayern have been eliminated by Spanish opponents in the last four seasons and are keen to change that trend. Playing in the quarterfinals for a club-record seventh season, Bayern have yet to lose at home all season.

Sevilla midfielder Franco Vazquez is nevertheless optimistic after they eliminated United with a 2-1 aggregate win in the previous round to reach this stage for the first time in 60 years.

"If we play a good game, we will have options," Vazquez said. "We need to be confident in our game. We are not interested in what is said outside. People have to respect Sevilla. No one has given us anything. We've earned it. "

Ever Banega returns from suspension to boost Sevilla's midfield line while Gaby Mercado and Joaquin Correa are both available after recovering from respective knocks that saw each miss Saturday's game.

Simone Kjaer sustained a muscular injury at the weekend and is ruled out.

"I know who will play but I don't want to reveal it until tomorrow," Montella said.

Bayern have six players, including Franck Ribery and Robert Lewandowski, that are one booking away from suspension.

"I don't know [if this will be] an advantage," Montella said. "I hope they don't play!"
