Jorge Sampaoli: 42-point club record fills Sevilla with hope

Sevilla coach Jorge Sampaoli is hopeful after his side set a club record by reaching 42 points after 19 La Liga games at the weekend.

The Andalusian club edged Osasuna 4-3 on Sunday to surpass the previous high -- a 39-point haul taken at the halfway stage of the 2014-15 campaign. That season, Sevilla set a club record of 76 points under former coach Unai Emery.

"The points record is very important for me because it fills us with hope for what's to come and it validates what we have been doing in the first half of the season," Sampaoli told his club's website.

Sampaoli, an Argentinian who previously coached Chile to Copa America glory in 2015, has enjoyed a strong start in his first experience at the helm of a team in Europe.

Sevilla are second in La Liga and have progressed to the round of 16 of the Champions League with a tie against Leicester City next.

Sampaoli's Sevilla made headlines last week when they ended Real Madrid's record 40-game unbeaten streak at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium with a 2-1 victory.

Sunday's triumph in Pamplona allowed Sevilla to remain one point adrift of Real, who have a game in hand.

"We are going through a good spell and we have to continue," Sevilla midfielder Steven N'Zonzi told the club website. "The record we have achieved is great but the important is the point that we have at the end of the season."

Under Sampaoli, who replaced Emery at the helm this summer, Sevilla have won 13, drawn three and lost three of their 19 La Liga games. The club's 42 goals makes it the third most lethal attack in Spain's top flight behind Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively.

"A lot of the points that we have has to do with our attack," Sampaoli said.

Sevilla have taken 24 from a possible 27 points at home and 18 points from 10 games on the road.

Sampaoli is hopeful his team can maintain their good form in the coming months and end the campaign with a new club points record.

"It's going to be difficult but we will try to do it," Sampaoli said.

Sevilla resume La Liga at Espanyol on Sunday.
