Navas uncertain over Sevilla future

Sevilla winger Jesus Navas has said he does not know whether he will be at the club next season.

Club captain Navas came through the ranks at the Sanchez Pizjuan and has played almost 400 games for Sevilla, winning six trophies including the 2006 and 2007 Europa Leagues and the 2007 and 2010 Copas del Rey.

However, with club president Jose Maria del Nido admitting that Sevilla’s best players could be sold in the summer to help meet mounting debts, the World Cup winner, 27, told Estadio Deportivo his future was up in the air.

“I do not know if next season I will be at Sevilla - at the moment, I am just focusing on what is left [of this campaign],” he said. “At the end, we will see what happens. I am relaxed.”

While rojiblanco fans could accept the sale of assets such as Geoffrey Kondogbia and Gary Medel, or even Spain international striker Alvaro Negredo, losing home-grown hero Navas would be a huge blow.

Nevertheless, with Sevilla looking unlikely to qualify for Europe next season - or any time soon - he suggested the time may have come for him to seek a new challenge elsewhere.

“I am a person who demands a lot of himself. I always aspire to achieve important things, but at the moment I am just thinking about the short term,” he said.

“I want to continue to grow as a player, and to be happy. We have achieved a lot of things at Sevilla, and we would have to get back to that level to fulfil the objectives we have.”

Navas, who made his first senior appearance for his only club in November 2003, has a reported €35 million release clause in his contract, which runs until June 2015.
