Black charged with 160 betting offences

Rangers midfielder Ian Black has been given a Scottish Football Association (SFA) notice of complaint for 160 alleged breaches of rules on gambling stretching back over seven years, including three charges of betting against his own team.

Scotland international Black, who joined Rangers in 2012 after spells with Inverness and Hearts, will be investigated by the SFA and his current side over allegations he bet against his "then-registered club" on three occasions between March 4, 2006, and July 28, 2013.

On March 4, 2006, Black played 90 minutes for Inverness in a home defeat to Motherwell. On July 28, 2013, Black played -- and scored --in a 4-0 Ramsdens Cup victory for Rangers against Albion Rovers.

The SFA said that “that there is no evidence to suggest any breach of Disciplinary Rule 23”, which forbids anyone participating in or influencing games from knowingly behaving in a manner that “could give rise to an event in which they or any third-party benefits financially through betting”.

In addition to the claims he bet against his own side, the 28-year-old also faces charges of “betting on a further ten football matches that involved his then-registered club” and “betting on a further 147 football matches”.

The SFA's disciplinary rule 22 states: “No club, official, team official or other member of team staff, player, match official or other person under the jurisdiction of the Scottish FA shall bet in any way on a football match (except authorised and registered football pools)”.

The rule encompasses football matches throughout the world, and guilty parties may be punished with a fine, suspension or expulsion from the game.

A Rangers spokesperson said: “The club is aware of the SFA's notice of complaint and are currently investigating the matter.”

Black has until Monday to respond to the complaint. A principal hearing date is scheduled for September 12.
