Man United's Scott McTominay chooses Scotland over England - sources

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has told the Scottish FA he has chosen to play for Scotland despite being born in England, sources have told ESPN FC.

England had attempted to beat Scotland to McTominay, and sources said the English FA was considering calling him up for next month's under-21 internationals against Romania and Ukraine.

The English FA had been in talks with his representatives for several months, but the 21-year-old has chosen to go with his heart and it will respect his decision.

He has been one of the revelations of the season for United and has started their last three matches, making 16 appearances in all competitions.

United manager Mourinho spoke to the press last week to warn England that they risked missing out on the Lancaster-born youngster and urged new Scotland coach Alex McLeish to hand McTominay a call-up. McLeish then met with the player at United's Carrington training complex on Thursday to persuade him to choose Scotland.

McTominay qualifies for Scotland through his grandparents, but had resisted attempts to persuade him to pledge his allegiance to the Scots, preferring instead to focus on establishing himself in the senior squad at Old Trafford.

Having not represented either Scotland or England at youth level, McTominay remained available to both countries and his progress at United had caught the eye of England under-21 coach Aidy Boothroyd.

Scotland could now call McTominay up for the senior friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary this month.
