Benedikt Howedes signs new Schalke contract until 2020

Benedikt Howedes has made 12 Bundesliga appearances this season.

Schalke have announced that defender Benedikt Howedes has committed his future to his hometown club.

Howedes, 27, is currently in his 15th year at Schalke, and on Wednesday the side's captain put pen to paper on a new contract that ties him to the team until 2020.

The 2014 World Cup winner with Germany, currently sidelined with a muscle tear, was delighted to sign his new deal, and told the club's official website: "My heart was thumping when I put pen to paper.

"Schalke 04 is a great club with amazing fans, a club I am thankful to for developing me as a youth player in the Knappenschmiede academy."

Howedes also said that he hopes he can help the young Schalke team in the years to come. He said: "We have a young team full of potential and ambition. I want to continue shaping its future."

Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt, who will leave the club at the end of the season, added: "We're delighted that Benedikt has taken this step, as it is a sign of real commitment to Schalke 04 from a leading player."

According to Bild, the new contract no longer includes a €12.5 million release clause, which could have been activated this summer.
