Freiburg's Kruse joins Monchengladbach

Borussia Monchengladbach have signed attacking Freiburg midfielder Max Kruse in a €2.5 million deal, and the player will join them in the summer.

Max Kruse reached double figures in goals for St Pauli in the 2011-12 season
Kruse has nine league goals this season

Kruse, 25, passed a medical and has signed a contract until 2017. He joined Freiburg from second-tier St Pauli at the start of the season and has impressed for the German cup semi-finalists, playing in every Bundesliga game and scoring nine goals.

Rumours of a possible move to Monchengladbach started spreading before the two clubs played each other in March – a game in which Kruse scored both goals in Freiburg’s 2-0 win.

“We’re delighted that Max Kruse has chosen to join us. He’s a fast, technically gifted player who can be used in a variety of positions and will strengthen our forward line,” Gladbach general manager Max Eberl said.

Freiburg boss Christian Streich, told about the transfer during a press conference, sarcastically said: “Terrific!”

Kruse is the second Freiburg player so far confirmed to be leaving at the end of the season.

Earlier this year, midfielder Jan Rosenthal announced that he would be joining Eintracht Frankfurt, while several other players have been linked with a move away.
