Francesco Acerbi ban overturned

Sassuolo defender Francesco Acerbi is available to play once again after his appeal against a positive doping test proved to be successful.

Francesco Acerbi is available to face AC Milan on Sunday.

Acerbi, 25, failed a random doping test before his side's Serie A encounter with Cagliari on Dec. 1. It has been demonstrated that the test was failed due to increased levels of a forbidden substance in his body.

However, this was not due to him actually taking a banned substance, but rather as a result of the re-emergence of a malign tumour for which he had received treatment in the summer, and which contained traces of the substance.

While tests undertaken to prove his innocence may have been successful, they have conversely revealed the return of the cancer he was first diagnosed with last year.

"This is a result which brings some serenity back and distances from Acerbi any doubts over his involvement in forbidden practices, which he has never adopted," the player’s solicitor Mattia Grassani said.

"Justice has been done. Now Acerbi can focus solely and exclusively on the medical treatment he needs to be cured as soon as possible from his illness."

Acerbi has played 13 times for Serie A newcomers Sassuolo this season, but has missed games against Chievo, Juventus, Fiorentina and Genoa as a result of this suspension.

The defender will be available to face former club AC Milan on Sunday.
