San Jose Earthquakes to name Mikael Stahre as manager - sources

The San Jose Earthquakes are set to name Mikael Stahre as their manager replacing Chris Leitch, sources have confirmed to ESPN FC.

The news was first reported by Swedish outlet Expressen. An announcement is expected within the next 48 hours, according to a source.

Stahre, 42, has spent the vast majority of his managerial career in his native Sweden, most recently with BK Hacken, which he led to a fourth-place finish in 2017. He had previously managed Vasby United, AIK, and IFK Goteborg in Sweden. He has also spent time coaching in Greece with Panionios and in China with Dalian Yifang.

Stahre replaces Leitch, who was hired in midseason to take over for Dominic Kinnear. While the Quakes made the MLS Cup playoffs for the first time since 2012, there were wild fluctuations in performance with numerous heavy defeats, including a 5-0 loss to Vancouver in the knockout round of the postseason. Leitch's overall record in both league and postseason play was 7-9-2.

It is unclear at present what role, if any, Leitch will continue to play in the organization. He held the role of technical director both before and during his stint as manager.
