San Jose Earthquakes sign free agent forward Chad Barrett

The San Jose Earthquakes have brought in forward Chad Barrett as the first free agent signing in the MLS club's history.

Barrett, 30, has scored 56 in his 11 years in MLS, with at least five goals in eight of the past 10 seasons.

"I'm very happy to be continuing my career with San Jose," Barrett said in a statement. "I'm excited to join Dominic Kinnear and John Doyle and the great group of guys they have over there and am looking forward to helping the team any way I can."

Last season with the Seattle Sounders, Barrett scored five times in 18 appearances, half of them as a substitute.

"Chad is coming off very good season last year," Kinnear said. "Adding Chad makes us a more dangerous attacking team next season."

Barrett was the third pick by the Chicago Fire in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft and has also played for Toronto FC, the LA Galaxy and the New England Revolution.

He earned his only cap with the United States national team in 2008.
