Rubin Kazan friendlies 'suspicious'

A leading prosecutor has told the dpa news agency that two friendlies involving Rubin Kazan contained “many indications of match-fixing.”

Leading German prosector Friedhelm Althans has said the games contained suspicious activity.
Leading German prosector Friedhelm Althans has said the games contained suspicious activity.

The games, which saw the Russian club lose 3-0 to Dynamo Dresden and 2-1 to SC Paderborn, took place earlier this month as the two German sides travelled to Turkey for winter training camps ahead of the 2. Bundesliga restart.

“Something looks suspicious,” prosecutor Friedhelm Althans, the head of the “Flankengott” taskforce investigating match-fixing in German football, said.

Paderborn informed the German Football League (DFL) of their own suspicions about the Jan. 25 friendly, which they won courtesy of a last-minute penalty. It is said an unusual number of bets had been placed on a late goal in that match.

There have also been suspicions raised over 2. Bundesliga side Arminia Bielefeld’s 2-2 draw against Azerbaijani club Inter Baku later on Jan. 25.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports that a large number of bets had been placed on at least four goals being scored during the friendly, which featured the same group of Turkish officials as the Paderborn match.

Two of the goals had come as the result of controversial penalties, with the match report on the official Bielefeld website claiming one spot-kick was awarded when a Baku player “slipped and fell into a puddle.”

“The German clubs are not involved in the alleged manipulations,” a DFL spokesperson told FAZ.
