Hiddink resigns as Anzhi coach

Rene Meulensteen has replaced Guus Hiddink as manager of Anzhi Makhachkala after the latter announced his resignation.

Hiddink is staying at Anzhi for another year
Guus Hiddink had a spell as Chelsea manager in 2009.

Meulensteen left Manchester United at the end of last season following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, and was appointed as a coach at Anzhi soon afterwards.

He has been promoted following Hiddink’s decision to step down – a decision that could be linked to the six-match ban he received for pushing an official during Anzhi’s 2-1 defeat against Dinamo Moscow.

Hiddink, 66, who only signed a one-year contract extension with the club in June after being linked with both Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, has played a key role in the emergence of the Dagestan club, which is backed by billionaire owner Suleyman Kerimov.

A statement on the club's official website said: "FC Anzhi has accepted the request of the head coach to terminate their employment relationship.

"The club sincerely thanks Guus Hiddink for his significant contribution to the club, and wishes him success in his future career."
