Russia confirm Leonid Slutsky to leave after Euro 2016 woe

The Russian football union (RFU) says Leonid Slutsky has quit as coach of the national team after a poor European Championship campaign.

Slutsky wanted to leave on Monday following a 3-0 loss to Wales, which eliminated Russia from the tournament in France.

The RFU, however, offered him time to reconsider ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Vitaly Mutko, the head of the RFU and also the country's sports minister, told the R-Sport agency that he met Slutsky on Saturday and "agreed that he will leave the head coach role."

Mutko added that Slutsky will continue "to share his knowledge" with the national team but wants to concentrate on coaching Russian club CSKA Moscow, having been splitting his time between CSKA and the national side.
