Guus Hiddink open to second spell with 2018 World Cup hosts Russia

Guus Hiddink would be interested in managing the Russia national team for a second spell ahead of the 2018 World Cup should the post become available.

Hiddink, 69, spent the second half of last season as manager of Chelsea following Jose Mourinho's departure and was reported to be continuing at Stamford Bridge in a consultancy role.

But the opportunity to return to full-time management with Russia, whom he coached from 2006 to 2010 and guided to the semifinals of Euro 2008, would be tempting for the Dutchman.

"If I can make a contribution, I will be happy to do so," he told NOS. "Russia sit in a particularly complicated situation, not only in the sporting arena but also in terms of their image.

"Sport can help them, although it is perhaps my idealistic thinking, to project a better image out to the world."

Russia were knocked out of Euro 2016 after taking just one point from their three games, following a 1-1 draw with England and defeats against Slovakia and Wales.

Current Russia manager Leonid Slutsky is yet to officially quit the role, although he is expected to tender his resignation.

In a management career spanning four decades Hiddink has coached Netherlands, South Korea, Australia and Turkey as well as PSV Eindhoven, Valencia and Real Madrid.
