Russian FA can't afford to pay Fabio Capello's salary - reports

The Russian Football Union (FUR) does not have enough money to pay the salary of coach Fabio Capello, according to the governing body's executive committee chief Sergey Stepashin.

Reuters reports Stepashin told news agency Interfax on Wednesday that Capello, 68, was not being paid his reported nine million euros per year salary, with claims in the Russian media that the coach has not received his wages for five months.

"I can say for a fact that the FUR simply does not have enough money to pay Capello's salary," Stepashin is quoted as saying. "It is not something to be proud of when we can't pay Russia's head coach what he is owed.

"However, when we signed a contract with him, we should have thought about which financial sources would pay his wages. Today we need to find these financial benefactors."

Capello -- who has coached England, AC Milan, Juventus, Roma and Real Madrid -- took charge of the Russian national side in 2012 and led them to qualification for the 2014 World Cup, their first in 12 years.

The squad disappointed in Brazil as they failed to make it out of the group stages, though the Italian signed a new contract after the tournament to take charge for the 2018 World Cup, which Russia will host.

Russian politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky reportedly branded Capello "greedy" and a "thief" following the national team's early exit in Brazil.
