Ireland's Martin O'Neill: I know who won't be taking any penalties

Republic of Ireland have already started to prepare for a possible penalty shootout, and coach Martin O'Neill says he has already ruled out some of his players.

The day before Ireland face France in the round of 16 at the European Championship, O'Neill said his team had been practising spot kicks for some time.

He said: "We have practised the penalties pretty well consistently, but in all honesty, replicating that on the training ground where all players want to take the penalties -- all of them, including he goalkeepers, everybody wants to take a penalty."

Though the 64-year-old recognises a shootout scenario in the knockout stages would present a very different kind of challenge.

"That might be slightly different," he said. "I have seen great players in the past out on the field and when it has come to penalty shootouts in European Cup finals, they down tools and don't take them.

"I think that it will depend obviously on who is on the pitch at the time if it comes to that, but we have done as much as we possibly can in that aspect."

"If we do get to penalties, there are at least three players I know who won't take them, who haven't been able to hit the target much."

When asked to name them, O'Neill was coy and said with a smile: "I shall not name them."
