Real Madrid begin Club World Cup defence against Chivas or ACL winners

Real Madrid will begin the defence of their Club World Cup title in the United Arab Emirates against either Mexican side, Chivas, or the winners of the 2018 Asian Champions League.

The Champions League winners will play their opening game, the semifinal, on Dec. 19 in Abu Dhabi at Zayed Sports City Stadium. The final takes place on Dec. 22 at the same venue.

Madrid have won the last three Club World Cups with Zinedine Zidane as their manager but it will be Julen Lopetegui's first venture into the tournament.

Chivas, from Guadalajara in Mexico, qualified for the competition through winning the CONCACAF Champions League after beating Toronto in the final on penalties.

Meanwhile, the Asian Champions League is still taking place and is in the knockout stages. Al Sadd, who have Spanish footballers Xavi Hernandez and Gabi in their squad, are still in contention along with beaten finalists two years ago Kashima Antlers.

Al Ain FC, the hosts, and Wellington FC, the Oceania Champions League winners, are the only other two teams qualified.

The Asian Champions League winners will be decided on Nov. 10, CONMEBOL winners will be decided on Nov. 28 and Africa's representative will be known on Nov. 11.
