Real Madrid lose captain Sergio Ramos to muscular injury

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos will face a spell on the sidelines after sustaining a calf muscle injury in training, the club announced on Friday.

Ramos, who was rested in Real's 3-0 midweek win at Numancia in the Copa del Rey round-of-16 first leg, reportedly got hurt during Thursday's training session.

The 31-year-old centre-back had tests on Friday morning, after which Madrid released a statement that said: "Following tests carried out on Sergio Ramos by the Sanitas Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscular injury in the soleus of his left leg. His recovery will continue to be assessed."

Marca reports that the Spain international could be out of action for up to three weeks which would see him miss three La Liga games as well as next week's Copa del Rey return leg against Numancia.

Ramos could return to action in time for Real's league game at Valencia on Jan. 27.

Real, fourth in La Liga, 14 points adrift of leaders Barcelona, resume La Liga with a trip to Vigo to face Celta on Sunday.
