Real Madrid's Gareth Bale can prove Bernabeu critics wrong - Carvajal

Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal has backed Gareth Bale to prove the critics wrong after he was whistled by the Bernabeu crowd against Valencia on Sunday.

Bale has had a sometimes difficult relationship with the Madrid crowd since joining from Tottenham in 2013 and was the target of criticism as the champions were held to a 2-2 draw.

With Marco Asensio having grabbed the limelight in recent weeks, backing for Bale has dwindled amid speculation that he could move back to the Premier League.

Speaking to El Partidazo radio show, Carvajal said: "In the end, you must find the positive side of everything -- whistles and applause.

"Bale is an important player for us. A lot is asked of him. That is why the Bernabeu sometimes shows its idea of him.

"But he has helped us a lot in these years, and will bring us a lot this season. We have a lot of competition for places, and I believe that is also good for Bale."

Madrid winger Lucas Vazquez told El Larguero he believed Bale had the personality to get through a difficult spell.

"I would work hard to try and change those whistles," he said. "The Bernabeu is very demanding -- all the great players who have passed through Real Madrid have been whistled.

"I don't believe it will affect Bale. He is a great player. He is above that. He wants to work hard, as he always does, and change it."

Asensio has become the new idol of the Bernabeu after superb strikes against Barcelona and Valencia.

Vazquez said the 21-year-old was "spectacular" and tipped him as a future Ballon D'Or winner.

"Marco is at such a high level and he still has room to improve," he added.

"He is very young, and the good thing is he is very humble. We hope to enjoy him for a long time.

"Although it is early to talk about the Ballon d'Or, I hope he can win it."

Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has promoted Asensio to the senior squad, and could give him a first senior start in Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Italy at the Bernabeu.

"For the level he is showing, he deserves to be here, of course," Carvajal said.

"It is a difficult call for the boss whether to start him or not. There is a lot of competition for places, with some great players who have been left at home too."
