Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo nets 600th goal, boasts 'I was very good'

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice against Juventus in the Champions League final to net his 600th goal for club and country.

Ronaldo, 32, earlier became the only player alongside Alfredo Di Stefano to score in three different European Cup/Champions League finals. The Portugal winger scored in the 2008 final for Man United and the 2014 final for Real Madrid.

His second goal in Cardiff was his 105th in the Champions League, putting him well clear of Lionel Messi (94) at the top of the all-time scoring list. And it made him this season's Champions League top scorer with 12.

"It was a spectacular end to the season with La Liga and the Champions League," he told Mediaset Premium. "We've got another record, the first team to retain the Champions League and the top scorer in the tournament. What more could I ask?

"I will now try to make the most of this unique moment in my career and then prepare for international duty with Portugal. Another Ballon d'Or? We'll see."

The goal was also his 600th of all time. He has scored 406 goals in 394 games for Real Madrid; 118 in 292 for Manchester United; five in 31 for Sporting Lisbon; and also 71 in 138 games for his country, Portugal.

In total, his 600 goals have come from a remarkable 855 games.

Following their 2014 and 2016 successes, Madrid have now won three of the last four finals, and the Portuguese told beIN Sports that Zinedine Zidane's charges were already thinking about adding another in Kiev in 12 months time.

"The objective is to win next season's Champions League, it is not easy, but nothing is impossible," Ronaldo said.

"Zidane's half-time chat was positive. We believe a lot in ourselves, we know we are a very good team. In the second half we have shown we are very good. The [La Liga and European Cup] double is another record for all these players, who deserve it."

Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo's brace helped Real Madrid become the first club in the Champions League era to retain the title.

Ronaldo's 10 goals from the quarterfinal stage on saw him power past Lionel Messi to become the Champions League's top scorer for a fifth successive season. He paid credit to Zidane's rotation policy keeping him fresh for the final few months, and also had a quick word for his critics.

"I scored two goals, am the top scorer in the Champions League again," Ronaldo said. "I have had a spectacular end to the season. I prepare for this. [Rotation] was a good option for me, from my coach, and I am very happy for how it has ended up.

"I am very happy as we are the first team to win two consecutive Champions Leagues, and scoring two goals. The people who always criticise Cristiano are going to have put their guitar back in its case."

Ronaldo received the Man of the Match award from former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, and took the moment to further heap praise on his and Real's season.

"My team was very good, phenomenal. On an individual level I was very good too," Ronaldo said after receiving the award. "I prepared well to be in good form at the end of the season, and scored important goals. So I am very happy.

"It was a very even game. Juve started the game very well, created some chances. But Real Madrid were impressive in the second half. Our midfield very good. Our defence high up. The goals came in a natural way.

Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo celebrates his third Champions League title over the past four seasons.

"The second half was one of our best performances of the season. It is always difficult in the Champions League final -- they had conceded just three goals all competition, and today four."

Speaking about the jeers Real fans levelled on him during down times in the season, Ronaldo said: "It is not the moment to speak about [whistles]. The most important is that I did again an amazing season. Me and my teammates we have won the double. You cannot criticise as the numbers don't lie.

"I am very happy, it is one of the best moments in my career. I get to say that every year. This year amazing again, last year amazing too."

Los Blancos president Florentino Perez told Cadena Ser radio that nobody could now doubt that Ronaldo was set to win a fifth career Ballon d'Or this year.

"What can I say about Cristiano Ronaldo?" Perez said. "He should win his fifth Ballon d'Or now, nobody can argue with that, his end of the season has been spectacular."

Real's World Cup-winning midfielder Toni Kroos also hailed Ronaldo after the game: "Everybody knows that he is very important. As a team we played very good in the quarterfinals, semifinals and today but at the end you need a guy to score to win this title and he did.

"He was fantastic, this past few months.''
