Real Madrid hold training session with Clasico basketball stars

Real Madrid's players took part in a special training session with the club's basketball side after their dramatic 76-75 win over Barcelona last weekend.

With no midweek fixture, Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane organised a joint session with the basketball players.

Bernabeu stars including Gareth Bale, Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric incorporated free-throw and three-point shot practice in their routines, although Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe worked in the gym instead.

"The Real Madrid squad got this week's training sessions under way with a rather special session which took place at Real Madrid City's basketball arena," a Madrid statement said.

"The workout, which was organised by [basketball coach] Pablo Laso and Zidane, saw a basketball match played on a half court."

Madrid club captain Ramos worked with Sergio Llull, who scored the late winning points against Barcelona, and told the club's official website: "Get a Sergio in your life and you'll find that things will go much better for you and that all will run smoothly."

He praised Madrid's fans after the side's return to the top of La Liga, adding: "We've got a fan base that gets behind us and supports us and whose excitement right until the final whistle is really noticeable.

"They're also the ones who help to put the ball in the back of the net."

Ramos headed the winner in Sunday's 2-1 victory over Real Betis at the Bernabeu, and praised the "great set-piece takers" who had helped create his goals this season.

"On a personal note, I always remain positive and optimistic and you've got to fully believe that you can do it right up until the last," he added.

"It's part of the DNA of this badge and the club's history and that makes it our duty to fight until the end."
