Real Madrid's Luka Modric 'happy and proud' after making 200th appearance

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric said he was proud of his achievements after being honoured by club president Florentino Perez to mark his 200th appearance for the club against Real Betis on Sunday.

Modric, who joined Madrid from Tottenham for €30 million in 2012, has established himself as a key player and helped the club to two Champions Leagues.

The Croatia national captain signed a new contract that will keep him at the Bernabeu until June 2020.

"I'm very happy and proud to be part of this great club," Modric told Madrid's website after being presented with a commemorative shirt by Perez.

"It means a lot to me. I wish I could play 200 more games, win lots of titles and give our fans a lot of joy.

"I believe that I've improved a lot as a player and a person, because being surrounded by great players on a daily basis helps your development out on the pitch.

"I'm pleased, and now I have to keep giving my all for Real Madrid."

Sunday's game also saw home-grown right-back Dani Carvajal, 25, play his 150th match for the club.

"I'm very happy to have played this many games," Carvajal said. "I've still got the same enthusiasm that I had when I came here when I was 10 years old.

"I've got an eagerness to keep learning every day, to win and to make history. I hope that I can win everything possible with this club."
