Luka Modric not ready to return for Real Madrid after training indoors

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric is unlikely to return to action in Sunday evening's trip to Celta Vigo after missing training on Friday, but Marcelo, James Rodriguez and Pepe could all make their comebacks from injury at Balaidos.

La Liga leaders Madrid suffered with a long list of fitness issues through a difficult January, and were eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Celta Vigo, but they have had better news this week with Modric, Marcelo, James and Pepe all playing their part in training earlier in the week.

However, Madrid's statement after Friday's session revealed that playmaker Modric had spent the day training indoors -- meaning it is unlikely coach Zinedine Zidane will take a risk with the Croatia international this weekend.

"The whole squad trained today before the away fixture against Celta on Sunday (8:45pm CET) as part of La Liga matchday 21," Madrid's club statement said. "Zidane's players focused mainly on high tempo ball work at Real Madrid City.

"The Whites carried out an array of drills centred around possession and pressing, sprinting, shooting on goal before playing a match.

"Modric trained using the indoor facilities, while [Dani] Carvajal and [Gareth] Bale continued with their respective recovery processes."

Modric suffered a right abductor muscle strain during a 2-1 home win over Malaga on Jan. 21 and has missed Real's last two games.

As the Champions League round-of-16 first leg at home to Napoli on Feb. 15 looms into view, first-choice right-back Carvajal is expected to return to full training early next week, while Bale has been stepping up his recovery from the ankle ligament injury sustained last November.

Madrid have also added two young Castilla players to their official squads for the remainder of this year's Champions League competition.

Full-backs Achraf Hakimi, 18, and Abner, 20, have replaced Martin Odegaard and Borja Sanchez, who have left on loan for Heerenveen and Mallorca B respectively.

Morocco international right-back Achraf has been training recently with Zidane's senior squad, and was on the bench for a recent Copa del Rey clash with Celta Vigo.

Abner is a Brazil youth international left-back who joined Madrid in 2014, and whose progress since has been affected by injury.
