Real Madrid coach Zidane Zidane: Players must rest before CWC games

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has said resting to ensure no ill-effects from jetlag was a priority ahead of Thursday's Club World Cup semifinal against Club America.

Madrid's players arrived in Tokyo at 5.15 a.m. local time on Monday after a 13-hour flight, training in Yokohama later that day after a short rest.

They also trained on Tuesday, with Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo present but club captain Sergio Ramos unable to take part in a session that was watched by over 200 members of the media.

Zidane said taking time to rest and get used to a new time zone was very important.

"Today is a difficult day because we didn't sleep a lot and arrived with jet lag," he said. "We'll rest today. I personally feel dead, but no problem.

"The players are going to rest, and tomorrow we'll be better off for a night's sleep.

"We have three days to work and we've arrived in good shape. We feel very good and are happy to be here."

Madrid left-back Marcelo said it had not been easy to sleep but added: "We are happy to be here representing Real Madrid, and there will be time to rest afterwards."

The players were welcomed by hundreds of fans as they arrived at Tokyo, and have also been meeting local supporters.

Marcelo said he had long been a big fan of Japanese culture, adding that his family had made the trip to Tokyo with him.

"The reception from the fans has been spectacular," he added. "I loved it.

"I had never been to Japan, although I have seen lots of cartoons. It's been a dream since I was little to be here."

The Brazil international stressed that Madrid "always have the duty to win when they play in any tournament."

"We always have to give our best to win," he said. "There are two games and we have our minds set on winning them both."
