Real Madrid's Gareth Bale to have operation amid fears of long layoff

Real Madrid have confirmed Gareth Bale is set to undergo an operation on his ankle amid reports he could be out for up to four months.

Bale, 27, was hurt during Real's 2-1 Champions League victory at Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday. Tests showed the player has suffered a tendon injury in his right ankle.

Madrid issued a statement on Thursday confirming Bale would have surgery in London on Tuesday. The Daily Mail has reported he could be sidelined for four months.

Marca, meanwhile, said Bale would be out for a minimum of two months; AS suggests he will be out for between two and three months.

A club statement read: "Medical Services Sanitas Real Madrid have decided surgery of our player Gareth Bale as a result of traumatic injury to the peroneal tendons in his right ankle. This intervention will take place at the King Edward VII Hospital in London on Tuesday 29 November by Dr. James Calder, under the supervision of club doctors Jesus Olmo and Mikel Aramberri."

Former Real Madrid chief doctor Alfonso del Corral had earlier recommended that Bale have the operation instead of following a conservative treatment for his ankle injury.

Del Corral, who was Real's chief doctor from 1994 until 2007, told Cadena Ser radio: "There are two possible treatment options, conservative and surgical.

"It's not certain that a conservative treatment will be good in this case because if it didn't work, you would then have to opt for surgery. Three out of four doctors would recommend him undergoing surgery."

Bale has been pivotal for Los Blancos during a 30-match unbeaten run in all competitions. He has scored 7 goals and set up 3 more in 16 starts for La Liga leaders Real this season.
