Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo: Marca top player award boosts motivation

Cristiano Ronaldo says receiving Marca's award for the best player in La Liga in 2015-16, on the same day he signed a new long-term deal at Real Madrid, gives him added motivation to win more trophies.

Ronaldo, 31, put pen to paper on his new five-year deal on Monday and said at the signing ceremony at the Bernabeu that the contract would not be his last.

The Portugal captain later visited the Florida Retiro hall, where he was given a fourth career Alfredo Di Stefano Award after scoring 35 goals and providing 11 assists during the 2015-16 La Liga season.

"All of my trophies end up in my museum," Ronaldo said from the podium. "It was a year full of emotions and I can't ask for any more than having won the Champions League, the European Championship [with Portugal], renewing my contract with Real Madrid and picking up this prize.

"I'm happy and these awards provide me with the added motivation to try to perform better and go on and win more in the next years."

Madrid finished last term strongly and ended one point behind champions Barcelona, despite struggling to produce their best form prior to Zinedine Zidane's appointment in January.

They are top of the current season's standings and aiming for a first title since 2011-12.

"It was a season that was full of emotions, but we've got to focus on the here and now," Ronaldo said. "La Liga is always very competitive, but it's not a sprint, it's a marathon. We'll be in the hunt, just like we always are. We must continue to work hard because it's through hard work that you reap your rewards."

Real Madrid's director of institutional relations Emilio Butragueno also attended the ceremony and said his club were "honoured" to be able to call on a player who might be second only to Alfredo Di Stefano in its history.

"It's a privilege that he's playing in our league and an honour that a player of his standing is at Real Madrid," Butragueno. "After Di Stefano, he has probably been our most important player, and in his case there'll be a before and after."

Ronaldo has previously said he intends to play on until he is 41 and he again suggested that could be the case on Monday, while leaving open the option of finishing his career elsewhere.

Butragueno said he hoped the former Sporting Lisbon and Manchester United star remains at the Bernabeu for the rest of his career.

"I hope he plays until 41 and keeps performing like this," the former Madrid striker said. "He will be here until 2021, but we would like to have him for many more years."

Marca also recognised Madrid striker Alvaro Morata with the Luis Aragones Trophy for the best player for the Spain national team last season, including Euro 2016.

Speaking at the event, Morata -- whose eight goals in all competitions so far this season see him currently sitting alongside Gareth Bale as Madrid's top scorer, one ahead of Ronaldo -- said he hoped to be challenging for this year's Pichichi top scorer award.

"We've started the season very well and I hope that when the campaign comes to an end I'll be up there with Cristiano Ronaldo, because he's sure to in the hunt for the Pichichi award," Morata said. "I hope to continue scoring goals and above all that they serve to see us gain points."

Morata afterwards told the "El Transistor" radio show that he did not have a problem helping his more illustrious teammate to get the goals he needed.

"[Ronaldo] is our best player," he said. "If he needs goals to feel good, we will get them for him."
