Cristiano Ronaldo backed by Real Madrid colleagues amid frustrating run

Real Madrid's Gareth Bale and Marcelo have backed out-of-form Cristiano Ronaldo, praising his hard work for the team.

Club president Florentino Perez, meanwhile, hailed the Portugal captain's legendary status at the Bernabeu but did not comment on any possible new contract for the 31-year-old.

Ronaldo cut a frustrated figure in Sunday's 2-1 home win over Athletic Bilbao, taking 11 shots without scoring to remain on two goals in six La Liga games this season.

There were also whistles from some supporters when he went for goal in added time rather than passing to unmarked teammates Mateo Kovacic and Toni Kroos.

But speaking to Madrid's official website after the game, Bale said: "The important thing is that the team wins and we are top of the league, not who scores the goal.

"Cristiano works hard to keep scoring goals, but the important thing is the team and I'm sure he's happy to be top."

And asked on beIN SPORT whether Ronaldo was anxious about his barren run, Marcelo said his teammate's overall influence was the most important thing.

"Of course he wants to score -- that is normal for a goal scorer," the Brazil international said. "But he is a player who helps the team a lot. Not only with goals, but also with his work on the pitch."

Earlier on Sunday, Perez spoke about Ronaldo at the club's AGM but did not mention the new long-term contract Madrid's record goalscorer has been asking for.

"He's one of the great legends of Real Madrid and one of the greatest in the history of football: Cristiano Ronaldo," Perez said.

"He was again the top scorer in the Champions League with 16 goals, after collecting his fourth Golden Boot last season, becoming the only player in the world who has won four Golden Boots.

"In addition, Cristiano is already the top scorer in the history of Real Madrid with a record that will be very hard to beat. Cristiano Ronaldo is a legend of Real Madrid and a legend of football."
