Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane: It's good Cristiano Ronaldo gets annoyed

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said it is "good" that Cristiano Ronaldo shows his displeasure at being substituted.

Ronaldo, 31, appeared to swear at his Madrid boss when he was replaced during the European champions' 2-2 La Liga draw with Las Palmas last month.

However, Zidane told RMC: "It's good he gets annoyed when I substitute him. You can see it a bit more than with others when he's not happy, but that's not serious.

"I explain things to him afterwards, and it's over. He scores in the next game, we give each other a high five, and there you go! It proves the guy is committed when he doesn't want to come off, that he always wants to give something to the team, and that's good."

Ronaldo has featured in just four of his club's seven league games to date after returning to training later than many of his teammates following his contribution to Portugal's Euro 2016 win, which ended with the Madrid man being injured in the final.

Zidane, who won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 with France, said Ronaldo's extended break had been highly beneficial.

"The idea that I put to the president and the players was that they take their time after the Euro," he said. "From experience, I know that you have to take a break after an international competition, whatever happens, whether you win or lose.

"After 1998, I couldn't put one foot in front of the other for six months. I have that experience, and speaking with the players, they told me they needed a breather, so we made that decision [to allow them to miss preseason]."
