Real Madrid upset by 'strange' ref decisions in draw against Villarreal

Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal expressed his anger with the referee's decisions after Los Blancos' 1-1 La Liga draw at home to Villarreal, which included the club's match delegate being sent to the stands for directing foul language towards the match officials.

La Liga leaders Madrid went behind just before half-time when visiting captain Bruno Soriano converted a penalty conceded by a Sergio Ramos handball, with Real skipper Ramos equalising soon after the break with a far post header.

Zinedine Zidane's team piled on the pressure through the closing stages, with Karim Benzema and Ramos having penalty claims turned down by referee Jose Luis Gonzalez Gonzalez, although the defender was perhaps lucky not to be given a second yellow card for simulation.

The final minutes brought even more tension as Madrid's match delegate Miguel Porlan Noguera -- known as Chendo -- was sent off for shouting at the fourth official, and home right-back Dani Carvajal was booked after the final whistle for haranguing Gonzalez Gonzalez about earlier decisions which had not gone his side's way.

The official match report, published online later on Wednesday, said that former Madrid right-back Chendo had used foul and abusive language when complaining to the match officials about the time being added on.

"In the 89th minute the coach Porlan Noguera, Miguel was sent off for the following reason," the report said. "When the fourth official indicated the added time, he approached shouting and using the following terms: 'This is s---. Send me off if you want.'"

Carvajal spoke to reporters at the Bernabeu afterwards and said there had been something "strange" about Gonzalez Gonzalez only adding three minutes of extra time with Madrid chasing a winner.

"The referee was not right with the time added on," Carvajal said. "There were five substitutions, constant time-wasting, it seems strange to me."

Speaking in the mixed zone after the game, winger Lucas Vazquez said he and his team had been upset by Gonzalez Gonzalez's performance, but should still have been able to do enough to take the three points.

"I believe there was a clear penalty on Benzema and we asked the referee why he added on so little time," the Spain international said. "We must do our work and be above the referee's decisions. We are all angry about not winning at home and we must learn from these mistakes."
