Cristiano Ronaldo behind only Taylor Swift on social media - report

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is the most followed male on social media, according to a report.

The Portuguese international has 238 million followers between his Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. Only Taylor Swift has more with 246 million, according to an analytics study done by Madrid agency Apple Tree Communications.

Singers Katy Perry, Selena Gomez and Rihanna follow Ronaldo with 219 million, 205 million and 190 million, respectively.

The study said that the top social media influencers in the world are young women from the United States: 13 of the top 20 personalities are in the world of music, 60 percent are women and 65 percent are American.

In February of this year, Ronaldo became the first athlete to surpass 200 million followers on social media.

His numbers put him past Barcelona rival Lionel Messi as well as beyond the combined total of basketball stars LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry.

Ronaldo, who captained Portugal to glory at Euro 2016 and scored the winning shootout penalty for Real Madrid as they won the Champions League for an 11th time, has added 5.4 million followers in the past 30 days, according to analytics site hookit.com.

Recently named UEFA's Best Player of Europe, Ronaldo drove social media ratings this past summer during Euro 2016.

Social media analytics recorded 1.42 billion likes, comments and posts related to Euro 2016 with 215 million of them coming during the final between France and Portugal.
