Real Madrid centre-back Pepe 'zen' off the pitch - Danilo

Real Madrid right-back Danilo says he gets surprised by his teammate Pepe's "crazy" behaviour during games as the Portugal international is so relaxed and "zen" off the pitch.

Earlier in his career Pepe gained a reputation as a hot-head after incidents including kicking Getafe's Javi Casquero on the head in 2009, stamping on the hand of Barcelona star Lionel Messi in 2012, and being sent off for head-butting Germany's Thomas Muller while playing for Portugal in their opening World Cup 2014 game.

However the 33-year-old has improved his reputation among many observers with some excellent and composed displays in recent months as Madrid won the 2016 Champions League and Portugal defended superbly to take the Euro 2016 trophy.

Speaking to Globo Esporte, Brazilian defender Danilo said he's been shocked at the difference between the Pepe he knows off the pitch and the player who "rages" his way through games.

"When I see the challenges from Pepe during a game I say to myself -- 'Pepe is crazy, the guy is sick,'" Danilo joked. "Because day-to-day he's a 'zen' guy. He speaks quietly, is very calm and is a good guy. Then training comes and he gets stuck in. If anyone argues he is the one who breaks it up.

"When I see him raging in the games I think -- it can't be the same person. When he plays he is completely different, and it is great for us. But in the day-to-day he is an exceptional guy, always with his little girls around the club. And he helped me when I came from Porto. He was by my side in the most difficult moments, as he had lived through something similar. He is a sensational guy."

Danilo had a challenging first season at the Bernabeu following a €30 million arrival from Porto last summer. Although by the end he had made 31 appearances and came on as a substitute as his side won the Champions League final on penalties against neighbours Atletico Madrid.

There's now no chance he is looking to leave the club. And his relationship with both president Florentino Perez and coach Zinedine Zidane is good, Danilo said.

"I just see the rumours in the press," he said. "When there is something concrete it always goes through my agents. And for something to happen, Madrid have to tell me they don't want me. I am very happy at Madrid, the president is happy with me, and I am happy with Zidane. The chance of leaving Madrid is zero."
