Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas to undergo Achilles surgery

Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas faces surgery on his left Achilles tendon, the Champions League winners have announced.

The 29-year-old Costa Rica international will undergo an operation in Madrid on June 9 after he had tests on Monday in Amsterdam.

Navas first suffered discomfort in his Achilles during the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, but he aggravated the problem in the Primera Division match against Valencia on May 8.

The goalkeeper was diagnosed with chronic Achilles tendinopathy following the Champions League final, and after the results were studied by doctors of the Costa Rica national team he was allowed to withdraw from the Copa America, which began in the United States on Friday.

A statement on Real's website read: "After the tests carried out today on Keylor Navas in Amsterdam, the doctor Niek van Dijk, under the supervision of the Real Madrid Sanitas medical services, has taken the decision to carry out a minimally invasive endoscopy on the left heel.

"The operation will take place on June 9 in Madrid, performed by doctors Van Dijk, Pedro Luis Ripoll and Mariano de Prado, under the supervision of the Real Madrid Sanitas medical services."

Navas is expected to be fit to join his Real Madrid teammates for preseason on July 15.
