Zinedine Zidane should stay at Real Madrid - Hierro, Carvajal and Isco

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has received widespread backing to remain in the job long term, although it remains unclear whether the Frenchman will continue next season.

Former Galactico player Zidane reportedly received a pay-rise on replacing Rafa Benitez as first-team coach in January and is under contract until 2018.

However, despite initial success in the role he has regularly refused to talk about his long-term plans, and before La Liga's final weekend said he could not say for certain what would happen at the end of the campaign.

The team have since finished the La Liga season winning their last 12 matches to push eventual champions Barcelona until the final day, and reached the Champions League final where they face Atletico Madrid on May 28.

But even a summer shakeup at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, which could affect big-name players, coaches and even president Florentino Perez, remains a possibility, especially if Atletico win the Champions League final in Milan.

Speaking in AS, Zidane's former colleague as a Madrid player and backroom staff member Hierro said he would have settled the situation already.

"If I was making the decision on whether Zidane should stay on as coach, I would not make it next year, I'd have done it yesterday," Hierro said. "When they thought Zidane would not coach he did it, he learned the ropes at Castilla and as a friend I feel he deserves all that is happening now.

"Three months ago it was difficult to see Madrid battling for the Liga title and getting to the CL final -- that shows the work that has been done. He has shown he knows the club perfectly, he has the respect of everyone and has done fantastic work."

Madrid playmaker Isco, who started out as a regular under Zidane but was then generally benched for the bigger games, backed the coach when speaking in Marca.

"It has been a difficult year, with ups and downs," Isco said. "We did not start well, but sometimes decisions are necessary, and things have got better. We reach the end of the season in the best form possible.

"What else can you say about Zidane, he brought a morale boost for us and the results back him up. We all know his history here, he was won almost everything. I am proud that he is coaching us."

Blancos right-back Dani Carvajal was dropped at first under Zidane for Danilo but returned to the team for the most important matches, and he said in AS that he was also happy for things to continue as they are.

"Of course I would like Zidane to continue," Carvajal said. "Plus he deserves it for what he has done. Zidane has managed the team well, sharing out playing time and that freshness allowed us to make it to the final in Milan."
