Real Madrid's Jese confident they can turn the Wolfsburg tie around

Real Madrid attacker Jese Rodriguez said his side would have to improve but remains confident that they can turn the tie around after Wednesday's shock 2-0 defeat at Wolfsburg in their Champions League quarterfinal first leg.

Madrid went into the game as huge favourites after Saturday's La Liga Clasico win at Barcelona, but were well beaten through Ricardo Rodriguez's penalty and Max Arnold's close-range strike after a lovely team move ripped open the visiting defence.

The 2014 Champions League winners still had over an hour to come back into the game, but Cristiano Ronaldo had an off night and Wolfsburg goalkeeper Diego Benaglio had very little work to do as Wolfsburg claimed the biggest European result in the Bundesliga club's history.

Speaking to BeINsports after the final whistle, former Madrid youth striker Jese -- who came on as a first-half substitute for an injured Karim Benzema -- said he was sure his side could turn the tie around in next Tuesday's second leg at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

"They are strong here," Jese said. "We have another game at the Bernabeu. With the help of our fans we can turn this around. We are a good team, we can do it. We will give everything at the Bernabeu, for our fans and for ourselves."

Italian referee Gianluca Rocchi enraged Madrid with his penalty decision after Casemiro had clashed with Andre Schurrle in the box, while Jese also said he thought Blancos winger Gareth Bale had been fouled in the area at the other end.

"There was a penalty on Bale too, which was not whistled," he said. "These things can happen in the game, it can go for you, or against you. We have to show we are a team, to come back from this."

But Jese added that this was not the time to look for individuals to blame and added that Madrid need to look at what had gone wrong and make sure they play much better at home.

"We win together and we lose together," he said. "I do not see the team as weak -- the other day we played a great game at the Camp Nou.

"This is a tough, big opponent. We have to think about what mistakes we made and correct them. We must analyse well the game, to improve.

"We are pros, we can make mistakes."
