Real Madrid legend Manuel Velazquez Villaverde dies aged 72

Former Real Madrid star Manuel Velazquez Villaverde has died at the age of 72.

Velazquez won six league titles and three Copa del Rey trophies between 1965 and 1977 and was part of the legendary Real Madrid side that won their sixth European Cup in 1966.

The midfielder made over 400 appearances for Madrid and scored 59 goals, while he also won 10 international caps for Spain before ending his career with Toronto Metros-Croatia in 1978.

Iker Casillas paid tribute to Velazquez via his official Twitter.

"Rest in Peace, Manuel Velazquez," the Porto goalkeeper wrote. "Legend of Real Madrid. Strength to his family, friend and the entire family of Real Madrid veterans."

Real Madrid released a statement confirming the former player's death and described him as "one of the club's all-time best academy graduates, which he went on to show during his twelve seasons as a member of the first-team squad."
