Real Madrid announce news conference amid Rafa Benitez talk

Real Madrid have called a news conference for Monday evening in which club president Florentino Perez will address the media amid speculation surrounding coach Rafa Benitez's future.

There have been suggestions Benitez may be set for the sack following Saturday's 4-0 Clasico defeat to Barcelona, despite only arriving at the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer.

Madrid announced on Monday afternoon that they will be holding a news conference later in the day, although they did not reveal the reasoning behind it.

"The president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, will appear before the media today at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium at 19:30 [local time] after a meeting of the board," a club statement read.

While some reports claim Benitez will be dismissed at the news conference, Cope says the Madrid board will use the event to give their "full backing" to the Spaniard.

Benitez has come under much criticism during his reign at Madrid, with many lamenting his supposed defensive style of play.

He is reported to have fallen out with Cristiano Ronaldo over the issue, with Fox claiming the Portugal captain has given Madrid an ultimatum to either sack Benitez or he will leave himself.

Zinedine Zidane has been touted as a potential replacement for Benitez, although the former Madrid player has cooled the speculation by saying he is happy with his role as coach of the club's B team, Castilla.

Madrid president Perez, who has also come in for criticism from supporters, could touch on Wednesday's court case involving the club during Monday's news conference.

A group of club members filed a case concerning the legality of the changes to the statutes, reportedly made by Perez, to ensure he was the only candidate eligible to run in Madrid's 2013 elections.
