Real Madrid injuries due to 'many factors' - club doctor Ximo Mas

Real Madrid doctor Ximo Mas has said many of the injuries suffered by Los Blancos players this season have been out of the club's control.

The 2015-16 season so far has seen Madrid suffer 11 different injuries in 96 days -- with James Rodriguez, Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Pepe and Mateo Kovacic suffering various different muscle problems, while Danilo and Sergio Ramos have missed games due to "trauma" injuries picked up in clashes with opponents.

Both AS and Marca claim that Madrid's dressing room are unhappy with how the club's medical team are dealing with this issue, with chief of medical services Jesus Olmo said to be particularly unpopular with certain players.

Mas himself left Madrid in 2013 before returning during a reshuffle of medical staff last summer, which was reportedly aimed at improving how injured players were treated.

Speaking at a club-organised event entitled "Health, nutrition and sport," the physiology expert said that the majority of Madrid's muscle injuries were picked up while on international duty.

"With muscle injuries there are many factors -- over-training, nutrition, the number of games, age, previous factors, injuries in the past year, not controlling the workload," Mas said.

"In our case, as the boss [Rafa Benitez] has already said, 60 percent of our muscle injuries have been caused by the national teams. In fact on Aug. 31 we had zero injured players."

Madrid had made mistakes in bringing players back from injury too quickly in the past, Mas said, while claiming other clubs who have played lots of games already this season have also had similar problems with muscle injuries.

"We had the bad luck that a couple of players got injured, and we had a couple of trauma injuries," he said. "That obliged us to introduce the players in a certain way, not rushed because we always aim for them to be in the best condition to compete, but we have seen that we have made mistakes in certain areas.

"That is what we are trying to fix so that the boss can have everyone available and difficult selection decisions. Barca and Sevilla have also had many muscle injuries, and other teams too."

Benitez claimed after Madrid's 3-1 win at Celta Vigo last Saturday afternoon that he had been "surprised" that his injury-hit squad had been scheduled to play just "two-and-a-half days" after their Champions League game at Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening.

The bigger clubs playing at such hours help viewers in East Asia, and La Liga chief Javier Tebas says he has no sympathy for such complaints.

"The times were fixed 40 days ago, and the first comments from Madrid about the situation I heard 24 hours before the game," Tebas said. "So Madrid either didn't follow the hours or should have had a look before. This will happen to Valencia soon, to Barcelona... It happens to them all -- depends on the luck of the draw."
