Luka Modric suffers thigh injury, adds to Real Madrid's personnel woe

Real Madrid have confirmed that midfielder Luka Modric picked up a thigh injury during Croatia's Euro 2016 qualifier against Bulgaria.

Modric was forced from the field at half-time during his country's 3-0 victory against the Bulgarians and then sat out Tuesday night's 1-0 win in Malta -- a result that clinched Croatia's automatic qualification for next summer's European Championship in France.

The 30-year-old former Tottenham playmaker subsequently underwent tests and Real revealed the extent of the injury on Wednesday.

A statement on the club's website read: "Following tests carried out on Luka Modric by the Real Madrid medical team, he has been found to have a muscular injury in the adductor muscle in his right leg.

"His situation will be closely monitored.''

No time frame has been given for Modric's recovery.

The news comes on the heels of another injury blow to striker Karim Benzema. The Frenchman was injured playing in a friendly with Armenia over the weekend and is now expected to miss La Liga games against Levante, Celta Vigo and Las Palmas as well as the Champions League double-header against Paris Saint-Germain.

His injury is a major blow for Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez. Benzema, who scored twice in the win over Armenia to end a one-year goal drought with France, had been in sizzling form for Los Blancos.
