Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos closing in on returns

Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo are close to returning to action for Real Madrid, amid concerns over the extent of the pair's availability ahead of the new La Liga season.

Ramos and Ronaldo both missed Madrid's 0-0 friendly game away to Valerenga on Sunday with fitness concerns, with Blancos coach Rafa Benitez saying before the match that neither had a serious injury but had remained behind for treatment on "niggles."

Ramos had reportedly suffered a knock on his right leg during the previous week's Audi Cup games in Germany, while Ronaldo has been receiving treatment for the lumbago problem that saw him miss that trip.

Madrid's latest club injury update, headlined "Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo on the road to recovery," said: "Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo trained on the pitch and in the interior facilities at Ciudad Real Madrid, led by club specialists.

"This Tuesday from 10 a.m. Rafa Benitez will begin taking his squad through the final stages of preparations before the start of the season."

Marca reports that Ronaldo should be fit to play in Wednesday's friendly against Galatasaray as he looks to get ready for the team's Primera Division opener against Sporting Gijin on Aug. 23.

Ramos shared a video of himself working out on his Instagram account, and AS reported that the Andalucian was using an anti-gravity system developed by NASA for astronauts to allow him to do fitness work without putting too much weight on the recovering leg.

Ramos has not commented on his future plans, however, even as TV station La Sexta reported that a new deal will be announced this Thursday.

There had been previous reports that the defender, a target for Manchester United this summer, had agreed to a contract extension but there has yet to be any public confirmation.
