Kiko Casilla determined to be Real Madrid's No. 1 goalkeeper

New Real Madrid signing Kiko Casilla is confident that he will earn the trust of coach Rafa Benitez and become the club's first-choice goalkeeper.

Casilla, 28, who returned to his former club Real last week in a €6 million move from Espanyol, has already joined Benitez and the squad in Melbourne on their tour of Australia.

The Spaniard is aiming to replace Iker Casillas as the team's No. 1 but will face competition from Costa Rica international Keylor Navas.

Before his signing, Benitez indicated that Navas was at the top of the pecking order following Casillas' move to Porto last week.

Navas began last season as Real's starter after a strong showing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but Casillas regained his place in the first XI several games into the campaign.

Navas is not with Real currently because he is sidelined with an injury but third-choice keeper Pacheco and Castilla youngster Ruben Yanez are with the team in Australia.

Casilla, who signed a five-year contract with Los Blancos, told his new club's official website: "My objectives are to be the first-choice keeper, help the manager as much as I can on the pitch, form a strong bond with my teammates and try to play as often as I can.

"It's true that I'm pretty familiar with everything, in terms of the housing, the installations, the city, and that helps towards adjusting to the move.

"I feel like I have butterflies in my stomach and I'm really eager, above all else to start training, which is what matters most.

"Being on the training pitch and being available for the manager."

Casilla joined Real at the age of 14 and spent seven years at the club before leaving for Espanyol in 2007.

"The teenage years have a lasting effect on a person and I spent mine here," he said. "I developed part of my personality and character here and I'm delighted to be back.

"I never imagined that I would return to Real Madrid after leaving. Life throws gifts your way now and again and you have to make the most of them. This was the gift I needed.

"I'm fully aware that what I'm going through at the moment happens to very few people. I'm very privileged to have signed for Real Madrid, to have returned to my roots."

A Spain international, Casilla has made 115 appearances in the Primera Division and is the goalkeeper in La Liga with the most saves made (209) in the past two seasons.

"I have gained experience, especially over the last four years during which time I've been appearing more frequently in La Liga," he said. "Each match is a test. You can tell I've played hundred odd games and that I'm no longer the kid I once was.

"I want to make the most of this and, above all else, I want to fight for this club."
