Carlo Ancelotti hints at dropping Iker Casillas for Real Madrid-Levante game

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has admitted he could drop No. 1 goalkeeper Iker Casillas for Sunday's La Liga match against Levante, but says the Spain international will definitely play in the Clasico clash with Barcelona.

Casillas, 33, has been in poor form for the Spanish giants this season, with two errors in the 4-3 Champions League defeat to Schalke fuelling speculation Real could move for Manchester United's David De Gea this summer.

Keylor Navas has failed to dislodge Casillas as the Bernabeu No. 1 since joining from Levante last summer, but may be given his chance against his former side by Ancelotti on Sunday.

When asked whether the Costa Rica international would start, AS reports Ancelotti as telling his pregame news conference: "Maybe, but maybe Casillas could play. I still haven't decided because we've got all the players available.

"I'll decide tomorrow, but I will choose a lineup to try to win, not to single anyone out. I have faith in every player.

"The team I put out wouldn't be to point the finger at anyone. If Keylor plays then I will have taken the decision purely to give him some playing time because he's training well; not to point the finger at anybody.

"If Keylor plays tomorrow then no doubt Casillas will play against Barcelona. If Casillas plays tomorrow, then on Sunday against Barcelona no doubt Casillas will play.

"[Keylor] is fine, he's not crying every day. He's keen, he trains well and he's very professional. If he plays I'm confident he'll do brilliantly."

Ancelotti is under pressure after seeing his side lose top spot in La Liga to rivals Barcelona, while club president Florentino Perez has denied reports that the Italian coach will be sacked should they lose El Clasico to Barca on March 22.

Perez claimed that the Spanish press have tried to influence Ancelotti to drop Gareth Bale after a poor run of form, but Ancelotti said: "I don't know. I'm not focused on that, so I can't answer. They don't put pressure on me because I'm focused on my work and on the players. I take decisions based on what I think and not what I hear."

Real still progressed to the Champions league quarterfinals 5-4 on aggregate despite the shock home defeat to Schalke, and Ancelotti insists both he and the players are focused after criticism from the Bernabeu crowd.

"In the position we're in, we can't lose our heads because of some criticism," he said. "I've also understood criticism as being something to help you improve your performance. Real Madrid is Real Madrid and coaching them means being involved in the biggest thing in the world.

"It's normal that when you coach the biggest club in the world you'll have the biggest critics in the world, it's standard for the job I have.

"When the fans whistle or criticise you, they aren't happy -- they want an improvement... It's clear that the recent [spell of poor form] has affected us; the players are eager to change things around quickly.

"I see a side that are keen to put the problems we've had behind us. We're highly motivated, the same thing happened last year. We're reaching the end of the season with lots of opportunities.

"The president said good things when he came out and denied the incorrect information [that had been published]. He's always shown me support and affection, when things have gone well and when they've gone badly.

"I'm also grateful to [former Spain coach Vicente] Del Bosque for what he said. I'm keen to carry on, I feel good and I don't have any doubts. I've a contract until June 2016 and there's time to think about things."

The coach admits that injuries to key personnel have hampered his plans, but is confident that Sergio Ramos will soon return from a hamstring problem.

"[Ramos] is great, he's recovered well," he said. "He's going to help the side just like [Luka] Modric will and all those who have recovered. He's got personality, quality and character and everyone is delighted that he's back.

"The injuries to major players like James [Rodriguez] and Modric have had an impact, but that doesn't mean I'm not confident about [Asier Illarramendi] or Lucas [Silva], or that there's much difference. But the truth is we've paid a heavy price for those injuries."

One player who could be on his way out of Madrid is Sami Khedira, with Schalke interested in the Germany international's signature as his Los Blancos contract ends this summer.

Of the transfer rumours, Ancelotti added: "We don't know anything about these stories. You'd have to ask the player... if he doesn't talk I don't know. A player can sign for another team, but that doesn't mean he's not professional. He's very professional and he'll work to the maximum up to June 30."
