Butragueno: Ronaldo is staying at Real

Manchester United will have their work cut out if they are to lure Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford from Real Madrid, Bernabeu legend Emilio Butragueno has indicated.

Ronaldo, 28, returned to United for the first time since joining Real for £80 million in 2009 as his current club defeated his old one in the last 16 of the Champions League.

He received a huge welcome from the Old Trafford crowd - something he made a point of thanking them for after the match - and did not celebrate his decisive goal.

That sparked speculation that the attacker, who has scored 38 goals already this season and been hailed by his manager Jose Mourinho as the world's best, could return to Old Trafford at some point, with his Madrid contract due to expire in 2015.

But Butragueno, now a Real director and speaking at an event to launch a summer legends match between the two clubs in June, said Ronaldo would not be going anywhere.

He told reporters: “Cristiano is under contract and we are very happy with him. We are delighted he is at Madrid because he is a fantastic professional, and very ambitious in a positive way.

"His contribution to the team and the club has been amazing since he arrived. We are very grateful he came to us and are lucky he plays for Real Madrid. He scores a goal a game on average. This is incredible.''

Butragueno said he had “never seen anything like this” and that Real knew they would score goals with Ronaldo in their ranks, adding: “It is an incredible advantage.”
