RB Leipzig appoint Per Nilsson as assistant sporting director

Per Nilsson has been appointed as the new assistant to RB Leipzig sporting director Ralf Rangnick, the Bundesliga club have announced.

The appointment of former Sweden international Nilsson will take effect from May.

The 34-year-old, who retired from playing last year, told kicker magazine: "There couldn't be a better start to this new chapter in my life."

Defender Nilsson hung up his boots after a 17-year career that included spells at German clubs Hoffenheim and Nuremberg and 16 caps for Sweden.

RB Leipzig said he had signed a contract until 2019.

"I am looking forward to this demanding challenge at RB Leipzig, a modern and attractive club with a clear philosophy," Nilsson was quoted as saying on the club's official website.

Rangnick coached Nilsson at Hoffenheim between 2007 and 2010.

On Wednesday, Sport Bild reported that Nilsson had played a key role in Emil Forsberg's move to Leipzig from Swedish club Malmo in 2015.
