Steven Gerrard confirms he's interested in taking over Rangers

Steven Gerrard has confirmed his interest in taking over as manager of Rangers.

The former Liverpool and England captain, currently in charge of the under-18s side at Anfield, said on BT Sport on Tuesday night that he has held initial discussions with the Scottish Premiership club.

"Yes, there is truth in the rumours," Gerrard said when asked about reports linking him with the post. "I've held initial talks with Rangers and the plan is to pick them up in a couple of days' time. We'll see.

"There is [interest]. I've held positive talks with them. I'm busy now for a couple of days but I will pick it up on Thursday and we'll see if we can progress it."

Gerrard will be in Italy on Wednesday working as a TV pundit for Liverpool's Champions League semifinal against Roma.

The 37-year-old would become the long-term successor at Ibrox to Graeme Murty, who was sacked earlier on Tuesday. Rangers said they hope to be able to release news about Murty's successor "in the near future."

Sources told ESPN FC earlier this week that Rangers are confident of appointing Gerrard and have a four-year contract prepared, with Gary McAllister set to be his assistant.

Assistant coaches Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson have been put in temporary charge for Saturday's home game with Kilmarnock.

Meanwhile, former England teammate Frank Lampard backed Gerrard to handle the pressure due to his experiences as a player at Liverpool.

"In terms of the size of the club and knowing Steven pretty well, I think it's a great opportunity for him," Lampard told TalkSPORT. "If it feels right, I think he can handle that pressure from his playing days, he's no stranger to that with the career he had in the game.

"He has cut his teeth at Liverpool with the young lads there and at some point Steven is going to step out of that and go into managing men, managing a first-team. So that's why I think Rangers would be a great opportunity for him."
