Joey Barton has 'used' Rangers and their supporters in 'PR stunt' - Boyd

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has hit out at Ibrox midfielder Joey Barton, saying he has "used" the club and their fans since arriving in the summer.

On Monday, Barton was suspended for three weeks after reportedly holding talks with manager Mark Warburton and board members.

The 34-year-old was last week told to stay away from the club for several days following a heated argument involving teammate Andy Halliday in the wake of Rangers' 5-1 Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic.

In his column in the Scottish Sun, Boyd wrote: "He's used Rangers and their supporters from the second he walked through the front door.

"His conduct leaves me sick to my stomach, and I urge all Ibrox fans to leave his hardback [his autobiography "No Nonsense"] to gather dust on the shelves.

"For me he only came here as a PR stunt, intent on creating a media circus. He's deliberately antagonised people at Rangers and at other clubs just to get himself in the headlines."

Warburton, meanwhile, said his players had been warned about the dangers of betting on football after it emerged that Barton faces a gambling investigation.

The former Manchester City, Newcastle and QPR player has been accused of breaching Scottish Football Association rules on gambling after allegedly placing a bet on Celtic to lose heavily in last week's Champions League clash with Barcelona.

If found guilty, he could land a ban to add to the suspension.

Warburton said: "The players north and south of the border know the situation. There is a zero tolerance policy and that has been made very clear to them."

Meanwhile, Stoke City assistant boss Mark Bowen hit back at Barton after he said Mark Hughes was "a terrible manager."

Barton worked with Hughes and Bowen at Queens Park Rangers, and Bowen told a news conference ahead of his side's EFL Cup tie at Hull: "Joey Barton has got a book to sell, hasn't he?

"He probably needs to bring up things about people because he may struggle to sell it on his football accomplishments, I suppose."
